Francesc Serramalera Abadal, a famous cyclist known as Paco Abadal, had a great passion for motorsports and, as a result, established close ties with Damià Mateu and Marc Birkigt, owners of Hispano-Suiza.

In 1908, he opened a service station in Plaça Letamendi (corner of Carrer Aragó) in Barcelona and soon obtained the Hispano-Suiza dealership in Barcelona, complete with his own workshop where he built custom bodies for vehicles and performed maintenance. His business relationship with Hispano-Suiza lasted until 1913, when, determined to build luxury cars under his own brand but lacking the resources to manufacture the engines himself, he reached an agreement with the Belgian firm Springuel Imperia to produce them, while he would assemble the remaining components.

The 1922 6-liter Imperia-Abadal achieved good results at the Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix, but this didn't translate into sales.

In 1923, the company began building high-performance luxury cars under the Abadal-Buick brand. A few years earlier, Abadal had become the exclusive representative for General Motors throughout Spain and seized this opportunity to secure the agreement: Buick supplied the engines and chassis from its I-45 model, while Abadal modified the radiator and other details, as well as producing the bodywork. On flat ground, these cars could reach 150 km/h.
Sales were strong until 1929, when, following the stock market crash, Buick retreated to the United States and abandoned Europe. It is estimated that around 500 Abadal-Buick automobiles were sold.

In an attempt to maintain his independent business, Abadal used the failed prototype of a car conceived by Hupmobile before the crisis for the European market. In 1930, a few examples of the 3.5-liter Abadal-Hupmobile with a 6-cylinder Continental engine were built, but this model did not achieve the expected success, and the lack of orders led to the definitive cessation of operations that same year.
